Wildlife at the Slough

California Wetland Habitat in our Backyard

The Famosa Slough is a richly biodiverse Marine Open Space.  The geology, hydrology and San Diego location all come together to form a web of life that is has birds and fish as the top predators.  San Diego is rich with endemics species, many are seen and live at the Slough.  Winter bird migration greatly increases the species count.

Join the Friends for Nature Walks on 3rd Saturday of the Month.

Birds

Over 260 species of birds have been observed at Famosa Slough! Migrating waterfowl are more commonly seen in winter, while others such as the least tern are summer visitors. Year around visitors include many of the songbirds, egrets, and gulls.

Native Plants

Areas restored with native plants become a food source for birds and insects and return the slough to a more natural condition.

Insects and Friends

Plant-eating insects need some of the specific wetlands plants at the Famosa Slough as host plants.

Marine Invertebrates

If you look closely, the shores of the slough are crawling!
